Moving Cost Estimator
Moving Cost Estimator
Use this calculator to add up the full upfront cost of moving to a new rental apartment. Enter the costs that apply to your situation and leave any fields blank that do not.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your monthly rent. This pre-fills an estimate of your security deposit.
- Enter the security deposit amount you have been quoted.
- Add any other costs you expect — leave fields blank for items that do not apply.
- If a broker fee applies, add it in the broker fee field. Broker fees are typically 1 month’s rent.
Understanding your results
The total upfront cost covers everything you need before the keys are in your hand. The second figure — moving costs only — removes rent and deposit so you can see what the move itself costs separately.
Costs vary significantly by city and market. Broker fees are standard in some markets (particularly New York City) but uncommon in others. Utility deposits depend on your credit history with the supplier.
Moving costs in the US
Security deposits are typically one month’s rent, though landlords can charge up to two or three months in some states. State law caps vary: California limits deposits to two months’ rent for unfurnished units. New York, Texas, and Florida have no statutory cap. Check your state’s landlord-tenant law before signing.
Broker fees are charged when a rental agent finds the apartment for you. In New York City, this is common and typically 10–15% of annual rent (roughly one month). In most other markets, the landlord pays the agent’s fee. If you are unsure whether a broker fee applies, confirm with the listing agent before viewing.
